Keep it simple

In the fight against pandemic influenza there is no substitute for good old-fashioned hygiene. Washing your hands thoroughly and regularly as well as disinfecting cooking surfaces and covering coughs and sneezes will be our best possible defence against pandemic influenza.
During previous outbreaks of viral infection, notably SARS in 2002, it was found that those who relied heavily on hi-tech solutions often fared worse than those who relied on the basics. This was because they became complacent about the little things - the things that make the biggest difference.
Getting into the habit now of washing your hands thoroughly and regularly as well as cleaning surfaces and reducing contact with surfaces that could carry germs is the best way to be ready for a pandemic.
Masks, gloves and goggles can all be very useful but you need to know how to use them safely, when to use them and when it is best to stick to the basics. As we haven’t faced a widespread, highly infectious virus in Canterbury recently, many of us have no personal experience of using face masks, goggles or gloves to prevent the spread of sickness. This means that we need to learn how to use these tools properly before they can be of any use to us.
It is your decision whether you think masks, gloves and goggles are the best option for your family, but before you resort to hi-tech measures, be sure that the basics are firmly in place.
