Simple things you can do TODAY to prepare your household
- Buy a few extra groceries each time you shop - stocking up on food, water and medical supplies (such as Dettol or Savlon, Panadol or any paracetamol from the supermarket) now will make it much easier to cope if a pandemic does occur and you can’t easily get to the supermarket or pharmacy
- Build up a support network of family and friends. Keep in touch regularly and be especially aware of those living on their own
- Make sure that you have thought about how staying home will affect you. Consider how you can look after any pre-existing medical problems at home. Talk to your doctor about medication and what to do if you do get sick and can’t visit your regular doctor
- Make an extra effort to always wash your hands, cover coughs and sneezes and throw away used tissues. This will be particularly important when you are around other people and will make all the difference in reducing the spread of influenza
- Keep up to date with what is happening in your community. Listening to the radio and talking to friends and family will help you know what you should and should not be doing
