Pandemic influenza on a budget

Stocking up on food doesn’t have to break the bank. Budget a few dollars a week, and buy the most essential and longest-lasting items first.

Nutritionist Bronwen King, author of Survive Bird Flu and Other Disasters, recommends these basic, budget-friendly supplies:
  • Salt (also useful as a gargle for sore throats, and in rehydrating drinks – mix one litre of water with three tablespoons of sugar/honey and quarter of a teaspoon of salt)
  • Rolled oats
  • Milk powder
  • Canned food: tomatoes, baked beans, corn, tuna, fruit
  • Pasta
  • Soup mixes (the hearty old-fashioned sort, with barley)
  • Packets of instant chicken noodle soup or stock cubes, to make rehydrating drinks for sick people
  • Dried fruit and nuts – the cheapest are usually peanuts and sultanas
  • Dried peas
  • Crackers and something to put on them: peanut butter, jam, Vegemite or Marmite
  • Bleach (for sterilising), detergent and soap
  • Plenty of paracetamol, and extra supplies of any prescription medicines being taken in your household.
