I'd rather be safe than sorry…
Carmel, mother of three young children:
I have a food pack ready in case we have to isolate ourselves for a period of time. I have combined it with the excuse of getting prepared for an earthquake or some other emergency. I feel with three young children it is my responsibility to make sure their welfare is taken care of. I've got a survival pack, with batteries and other items. I've started stockpiling food - whether a pandemic is just a lot of hype, who knows, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I've got the basics to last about three weeks like rice, pasta, canned tomatoes, spaghetti, baked beans, jars of pesto and crackers. I checked the expiry dates and most things last until about May or June next year. I will be aware of that and can update where necessary.
I am going to stock up on Pamol for the children, for high temperatures, and Panadol for ourselves to be on the safe side.
I am going to store water in airtight containers and I will get masks next.
We have also planted a bigger garden than usual, with tomatoes, lettuce, beans and zucchinis. We're lucky to have an artesian well in our garden that we can use.
As far as pulling the children out of school and pre school, we would - to a point - rely on the advice of the facilities themselves. Needless to say, we would be keeping a close watch on local events.
